Contemporary Demographic Challenges
Changing patterns in fertility, migration, population aging, and health disparities present contemporary global challenges. This advanced-level course explores emerging demographic trends and their far-reaching societal consequences.
Students will examine specialized demographic topics while developing critical analytical skills through seminar-style discussions and presentations. The course draws on comparative international perspectives and enables students to identify innovative research areas, formulate research questions grounded in current demographic literature, and evaluate diverse scholarly approaches from multiple disciplines and cultural contexts. Key topics include recently diverging demographic trends and their societal implications, the complexities of migration trends, the impact of life uncertainty on demographic behavior, and the intersection of demographic change with environmental and political factors. Students will also critically assess policy responses to these demographic challenges. This course is designed for advanced social science students seeking to understand and engage with the most pressing demographic issues of our time.
Teaching is given in the form of lectures, seminars and/or workshops.
Assessment
The course is continuously assessed by oral presentations, individual written assignments, active attendance and a written examination.
