Social Network Analysis

By using a network perspective, the focus of social analyses is shifted from the social actors themselves to the relations connecting them. The course provides an introduction to contemporary social network analysis and comprises an overview of the theoretical and methodological literature in this field, as well as computer-based exercises.

After completing the course, students should be able to:​

  • Describe the theoretical and methodological foundations of social network analysis​
  • Describe different types of network data and how they can be collected
  • Use central concepts of social network analysis to illuminate theoretical and methodological research issues ​
  • Conduct simple analyses of a social network using a computer program​
  • Present the results of social network analysis, statistically and visually​
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a social network analysis study​
  • Identify social network analysis analytic research problems


Teaching Format

The course is a combination of lectures, seminars and student-led seminars together with computer exercises.

Assessment

The grading is based on written assignments and active participation. 

Examiner

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.


Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
