Mediating Romance Language Literatures in a Global World

How does literary fiction travel across nations, cultures, and languages?

With a focus on literature from the Romance language area, the course presents the historical, aesthetic, and sociocultural factors that influence literary circulation. Based on a theoretical framework of world literature, translation studies, reception, and literary mediation, various aspects of the conditions for the dissemination of Romance literature are highlighted and problematized. The course also provides insights into the factors that affect how literature from the Romance language area circulates in the field of world literature, such as intercultural actors and networks, literary prizes, national vs international literary canon.

The course consists of two introductory lectures, four seminars, and a concluding workshop. Each seminar delves into literature from a specific Romance language area: French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.




Assessment

The course is assessed through a course essay written in French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, or English.
