Portuguese II

This course takes your knowledge from Portuguese I to the next level. You will deepen your language proficiency and explore both Portuguese-language literature and the culture of Portuguese-speaking countries. Here, you’ll gain insights into the cultural and social life that will help you understand the language on a deeper level.

Portuguese II is designed for those who have studied Portuguese I at university or have acquired equivalent qualifications in another way, such as through prior learning. You will take four different course units: Language Structure and Introduction to Linguistics, Contemporary Portuguese Literature and Culture, Oral and Written Language Proficiency, and Area Studies. These course units deepen your knowledge of the Portuguese language and the culture of countries where it is spoken, as well as introduce you to Portuguese-language literature. If you are unable to study full-time, there is an option to take Portuguese II part-time over the course of a year. Check available options on antagning.se.

This course description explains how we run the course in practice. The syllabus should provide good guidance, but is not exhaustive. Further clarification, either verbal or written, will be provided by the teacher during the course.  Do not hesitate to ask the teacher if you have any questions about how to carry out various tasks. The course unit Language Structure and Introduction to Linguistics discusses linguistic aspects of modern Portuguese and includes a review of key aspects of Portuguese grammar and phonetics. The student will learn how to analyse authentic texts and identify similarities and differences between Brazilian and European Portuguese.

The course unit Contemporary Portuguese Literature and Culture is mainly about fictional texts, complemented by other forms of cultural expression (e.g. music and film) from Portuguese-speaking countries. The material is analysed from both a linguistic and a literary perspective, as well as placed in a social, political, and cultural context.

The course unit Oral and Written Proficiency aims to increase the student’s ability to communicate in spoken and written Portuguese.

The course unit Area Studies provides a general overview of the history, geography, society, and culture of the Portuguese-speaking countries. The texts are studied in terms of both content and language.


Teaching Format

The course unit Language Structure and Introduction to Linguistics covers the linguistic aspects of modern Portuguese and includes a review of basic linguistic terminology and key aspects of Portuguese grammar and phonetics. You will be trained to analyse authentic texts and identify differences and similarities between Brazilian and European Portuguese.

The course unit Contemporary Portuguese Literature and Culture involves the study of mainly fictional texts, complemented by other forms of cultural expression (e.g. multimedia such as music and film) from Portuguese-speaking countries. The material is analysed both linguistically and literarily and placed in a social, political and cultural context. The course is both literary and cultural and aims to emphasise the link between literature and society in Portuguese-speaking countries.

The course unit Oral and Written Proficiency focuses on improving your ability to communicate orally and in writing in Portuguese. You will practise writing structured texts adapted to the type of text and genre, with appropriate vocabulary and correct use of language rules. You will also have the opportunity to edit your texts with feedback from your peers and teachers. In oral communication, you will be trained to express yourself in a clear and detailed way, with an appropriate choice of words, clear pronunciation and application of the language rules applicable in Portugal and/or Brazil.

The course unit Area Studies provides an overview of the main features of the history, geography, social life and culture of the Portuguese-speaking countries. Texts are studied from both a content and a linguistic perspective. Written and oral presentations will be made in connection with the study of texts.


Assessment

The course unit Language Structure and Introduction to Linguistics, 7.5 credits, is assessed by an oral exam and a written exam (alternatively, an oral exam and a digital examination conducted remotely with live streaming if you study the course online).

The course unit Contemporary Portuguese Literature and Culture, 7.5 credits, is assessed through written assignments, a written exam and oral presentations.

The course unit Oral and Written Proficiency, 7.5 credits, is assessed through individual written assignments and oral presentations.

The course unit Area Studies, 7.5 credits, is assessed by individual written assignments, a written exam and oral assignments.

Home assignments (i.e. essays, short independent projects and other assignments) must be written in your own words and based on your own reflections on the subject. All quotations must be properly cited, in quotation marks and with an indication of the source. A piece of writing must not consist mainly of quotations. These should only be used to illustrate your own argument. If sources are missing or very incomplete and the teacher discovers plagiarism, this may lead to a report. Remember to use your own words even in oral presentations. If there are assignments in the course, they will be checked using a text-matching tool. Equipment required for digital examinations conducted remotely with live streaming
Digital examinations conducted remotely with live streaming require a computer (with an internet connection and a microphone) and an external camera. Please read the instructions for digital examinations conducted remotely with live streaming. It is important that you familiarise yourself with these instructions well in advance of the exam.


The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.


Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
