Arts and formalisms

This course aims to provide in-depth knowledge of the meaning of various formalisms, as well as principally important criticisms made against them.

Formalisms have emerged in a broad field between aesthetics and science. Historically, musical aesthetic formalism was pioneering, but the formalisms that have developed in connection with other art forms display not only similarities but also differences. The course is centred on a selection of classics from different areas, with a focus on common key themes and approaches, as well as differences in approach and ideology.

Teaching Format

Instruction is given in the form of lectures and seminars.

Assessment

The course is examined on the basis of a take-home examination and an oral group examination.
