Sources and documents: analysis, source criticism and interpretation
This course discusses archives and archive theory in relation to the material structure and provenance of early modern art objects.
The course explores meanings and definitions of historical understanding and historical sources with a focus on primary historical sources of relevance to art history and art objects in museums. The course provides in-depth knowledge of printed and digital source collections, as well archival typologies and their strategic use in the field of art history. The course provides in-depth knowledge relating to the development of potential art-historical research questions based on historical sources and the relationship between historiography and documents.
Admission to the course requires that the student has been admitted to the International Master’s Programme in Art History: Technical Art History and the Art Museum, or the International Master’s Programme in Art History.
Teaching Format
Instruction is given in the form of lectures, seminars and study visits.
The language of instruction is English. Attendance is mandatory.
Assessment
The course is examined on the basis of written assignments in the form of a take-home examination and a written paper.
