Proteins in eukaryotic cells


The course covers expression of proteins and silencing of protein expression in eukaryotic cells. Also, posttranslational modifications and intracellular sorting and transport of proteins in eukaryotic cells is covered. The course also covers methods used for gene editing, methods for studies of protein distribution and dynamics, as well as studies of protein-protein interactions in vitro and in live cells.

After completing the course, the student is expected to be able to:

- Explain the expression system of genes in mammalian cells and how gene expression can be edited or silenced in eukaryotic cells (module 1, module 2).

- Explain methods that can be used to study protein distribution and interactions in mammalian cells, including in living cells (module 1, module 2).

- Make assessments and discuss societal and ethical aspects of protein biochemistry (module 1).

- Experimentally express and analyse proteins in eukaryotic cells (module 2).

Modules

The course consist of the following modules;

Module 1: Teori (theory), 5 hp

Module 2: Laboratory exercises (Laborationer), 2.5 hp

Teaching Format

Teaching consist of lectures, exercises, laboratory sessions and seminars.


Assessment

The course is examined in the following manner:

Assessment of module 1 takes place through written exam.

Assessment of module 2 takes place through written reports.
