Korean Popular Culture in a Global Context
It also examines the factors that have contributed to the global growth of South Korean popular culture, which gained momentum in the late 1990s and has now spread over large parts of the world. This phenomenon, also known as the Korean wave, hallyu, has been able to flourish and expand greatly due to the South Korean state's active role and investment in soft power, where the export of culture and entertainment in the form of music, TV series, film has been a important part of nation branding.
A further aspect that will be touched on is the way in which the South Korean government has used soft power and the global popularity of Korean popular culture to position itself geopolitically and what challenges but also opportunities this may bring in relation to neighboring countries such as China and Japan.
