Reflective Practice in Business Administration
The overall purpose of the course is for students to be given the opportunity to relate theoretical knowledge to professional experience, in order to hence enrich their general knowledge, skills and abilities within the business administration field.
The internship course can also serve as preparation for the subsequent writing of a master’s thesis, where empirical studies and data collections are essential.
Following the completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- explain what in particular characterizes practical, action-based knowledge
- discuss the differences between theoretical and practical knowledge
Competence and skill
- implement a theoretically based, reflective analysis of the experience of the internship, in which literature from both this course and earlier program courses will be used.
Judgement and approach
- critically reflect upon and evaluate whether and if so how the skills acquired through training can be translated into practical experience, and conversely, how practical experience can be used to develop theoretical, science-based reasoning;
- independently formulate and evaluate the theoretico-practical training elements of importance and relevance to a future career.
The course is structured around three main activities:
- a 15-20 week internship period where work is combined with practical supervision, and the continuous and reflective writing of a work diary, as a basis for hand-in assignments;
- a three week writing period during which a theoretically founded and critically reflective practice essay is written.
Teaching Format
This course includes the following modules:
- an internship in an organization in Sweden or abroad;
- daily writing of a reflective work diary/log;
- writing of assignments;
- writing of a critically reflective practice essay;
- a peer review process of the practice essays.
The language of instruction on all courses is English. For more detailed information, see the study guide, available in Athena no later than one month before the course commences.
The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course.
We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course,
your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
