Advanced quantitative methods

The course builds on knowledge in quantitative methods from Quantitative methods (7.5 ECTS) or equivalent social science method courses.

The aim of the course is to provide the student with in-depth knowledge and insights into quantitative methods, used in economic history and international relations, such as time-series and panel data analysis.

The course thereby further develops students' understanding of, critical approach to, and application of quantitative methods in social sciences. The course place particular emphasis on further developing students’ ability to independently conduct various forms of analysis in statistical software and to present of results from quantitative analyses in written format.

Learning outcomes

To obtain a passing grade, the student should be able to:

  • Critically evaluate and discuss quantitative methods used in economic history and international relations.
  • Formulate models and conduct time series and panel data analyses of source materials using statistical software and present the results within given time frames.
  • Be familiar with the problems that can be solved using e.g., panel regression, autoregression, structural break tests, ARMA, ARIMA, unit root tests, cointegration, instrumental regression, and logistic regression.


    Teaching Format

    Teaching consists of lectures and seminars/computer labs.

    Attendance at seminars/labs is mandatory.

    In case of absence, supplementation is made in accordance with the course convener's instructions. However, no more than one-fourth of the seminars/labs can be compensated

    All courses on the Department's Master's level are all held in English.


    Assessment

    The course is assessed through (1) written tasks/tests and (2) participation in seminars/computer labs.

    The language of examination is English.


    The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.


    Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
