Stockholm University, Dept. of Social Work is one of the largest Academies in Sweden offering Social Work Education on Bachelor and Master level.
Subject description
The BSc programme in Social Work covers a broad range of topics preparing the students for future careers in different fields of social work, such as in the social services, the health care and education system, rehabilitation, correctional services or the private sector. The BSc is taught in Swedish.
On the advanced level the department offers an MSc programme in Social work (taught in Swedish). We also offer a course taught in English every semester:
- The Swedish Model: The Swedish Model: Challenges for social work with Child and Family Welfare, 15 ECTS.
- The Swedish Model: Challenges for social work with social exclusion, 15 ECTS.
- The Swedish Model: Challenges for social work with elderly and disabled , 15 ECTS.
- The Swedish Model: Challenges for social work with mental un-health, alcohol and drug-abuse, 15 ECTS.
The Department of Social Work also offers education in the form of individual courses, mainly at the advanced level (taught in Swedish).
Conversion programme for persons with a foreign degree in Social Work.
Four semesters full time study lead to a "socionomexamen" - Degree of Bachelor of Science in Social Work. The programme is given in Swedish.

Career opportunities
Social workers are a sought-after professional group.
The education provides you with broad competence in qualified social work and prepares you for various professions within the private, public, and non-profit sectors. As a social worker, you can work as a social secretary or counselor, in institutional care for children and youth, social work with substance abuse, or as a case manager or unit manager within elderly and disability care.
Additional examples of work areas for social workers include schools, healthcare, correctional services, voluntary organizations, county administrative boards, and family counseling.
